Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II painted as Vertumnus (1590-1), Roman God of the seasons, by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593)

This is a rare portrait of Rudolf II, the Holy Roman Emperor, painted as Vertumnus, a Roman God of the seasons of Etruscan origins and who seduced and married the goddess of fruits and orchards Pomona. The portrait is painted by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593). Arcimboldo (or Arcimboldi) is famous for creating portraits made entirely of objects such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish, and other similar objects. His technique used to be painting these objects on the canvas and arranging them in such a way that they formed recognizable images of the persons whose portraits were so created.
