François-Léon Sicard: Statue of George Sand in Jardin du Luxembourg
This statue of the famous French novelist and political thinker George Sand (Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin) in the Jardin du Luxembourg (the Luxembourg Gardens) in Paris, is considered one of the best works by the French sculptor François-Léon Sicard (1862-1934), who is credited with numerous sculptures around the world.
George Sand (1804-1876), who was also a writer on politics and who has identified herself as a socialist through her writings, always supported the causes concerning people of the working class and the poor, and fought for women’s rights, especially through her own newspaper.
She once wrote: ‘I cannot believe in any republic that starts a revolution by killing its own proletariat.’ This view is more relevant today than the times in which she lived and worked, if the number of people being killed in today’s world for political reasons is taken into account.
