The picture shows Emerald crystals from the Muzo mines in the Western Boyacá Province of Columbia under Ultraviolet (UV) light which is used for analyzing and testing the purity of gemstones and minerals. Emerald is made up of the mineral Beryl with the molecular formula Be3Al2 (SiO3)6. Emerald is green because of the presence of small amounts of trace elements such as Chromium and Vanadium.
Muzo town is situated in Boyacá Department in Columbia, in the western side of the eastern ranges of the Andes Mountains. The town is famous for the emerald mines situated in its nearby areas. These mines are said to contain the world’s highest quality emerald gems.
