Femme au Coquillage or Woman with Seashell is an oil painting created by Bouguereau in 1885, depicting a woman holding a seashell. She is possibly in a naturally formed rock cave on the seashore, with the seascape in the background.
Apart from the large seashell she is holding in her right hand, there are smaller shells lying around. Seashells are associated with Venus, and they are also symbolic of the human female vulva, a symbol of life and fertility.
Femme au Coquillage is without doubt one of the most beautiful paintings ever created by Bouguereau. The woman is posed in a classical pose and she is gazing straight at the viewer.
