The Toilet of Venus (La toilette de Vénus) is a sculpture by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), who is considered the progenitor of modern sculpture. Many of Rodin’s celebrated sculptures were criticized during his lifetime. Though he was schooled in traditional styles, most of Rodin’s work departed from traditional styles and he developed his own style, which he refused to change, though he was aware of the criticisms. Today he remains one of the most celebrated artists known outside the visual arts circle.
